How sentences are detected
Sentences are split on terminal punctuation — periods, question marks, exclamation points, and ellipses. Abbreviations and decimal numbers can occasionally fool any automatic splitter, so treat the count as a close estimate for natural prose.
Average words per sentence is a useful editing signal: most readable writing sits around 15–20 words per sentence. Much higher, and sentences may be hard to follow.
Examples
| Example | Input | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Two sentences | Hello there. How are you? | 2 sentences |
| Ellipsis | Wait... really? | 2 sentences |
Frequently asked questions
How are abbreviations handled?
Abbreviations like "Dr." or "e.g." can sometimes be read as sentence endings. For natural prose the count is highly accurate, but heavily abbreviated text may be off by a little.
